TAKING ART TO THE SEWERS

Gordon Matta-Clark has an interesting quote that summarizes his artistic practice, “I want to take art out of the galleries and into the sewer”. What I take from this is that he was encouraging people to go out and explore the world to find art. His artworks were avant-garde and questioned people's perceptions of architecture and sense of place. Galleries should not follow the same traditional lines; they should be tailored to the type of art, time and place. For my designed gallery I want to take Matta-Clark’s spirit of exploration and celebrate the urban grunge of Newtown, perhaps somehow including a reference to the sewers and urban decay.
